Wimbledon Adopts Video Challenge System This Season.

Wimbledon tennis court with video review technology

Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in implementing replay technology.

Video review technology will be launched at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.

Players will gain the ability to contest certain decisions from the official, following the practice currently in operation at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.

This technology will be accessible on the main stadium and Court One throughout the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles contests.

This development arrives only a season following the AELTC implemented electronic line calling, which terminated the 147-year tradition of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the official to re-examine specific decisions, including:

  • If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or body during play.
  • Possible hindrance end of a point.

Importantly, there is an unlimited number on the amount of challenges a player can ask for.

A Recent Example

An illustrative example took place in a recent tournament last week, where a top player initiated the review system against Jack Draper.

The British player admitted it was a tough situation for the official, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."

The umpire viewed a video and ruled Draper was responsible for hindrance, awarding the point to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

This technology are not exclusive to major tournaments. It has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews in place at every one of its events.

Additional Innovations

Another change at The Championships 2025 will be the addition of graphical cues on displays to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses situations where fans have occasionally been unsure whether a shot was out or in.

Finally, with precisely 100 days to go until the start of the tournament, the AELTC have also announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
