The Himalayan nation's Political Landscape Sees Major Partnership Forged Between TV Host and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a significant move ahead of next year's national polls, two high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition emerges in the wake of widespread and deadly young people's demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the removal of the sitting government.

A Pledge to Tackle Young People's Demands

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly vowed to focus on the issues raised by the new generation. This promise comes after the turbulent anti-corruption protests that took place in September, which resulted in considerable loss of life.

"Consensus should not be what a leader wants, it should be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane after the agreement was signed.

The late summer revolt was triggered by widespread frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a catalyst for underlying discontent stemming from years of slow growth and longstanding accusations of deep-rooted graft in politics.

Terms of the New Political Partnership

According to the official pact, the positions for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling broad public dissatisfaction with the country's established political leadership. He has in the past held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central player in Nepal's current political transition. He was instrumental in setting up the interim government that came to power after the previous administration was dissolved.

Wider Political Discussions Taking Place

In a related development, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend conducted consultations with several major political leaders. These discussions included ex- prime ministers and the presidents of rival major parties, marking the first such dialogue since the period of the uprising.

Following these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that conducting a credible election is a collective responsibility. The message affirmed the government's dedication to ensuring a safe and open environment for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
