Conservative reactions to the partial release of files related to the Epstein case have been sharply divided, with certain backers of the former Trump administration pointing out the noticeable presence of former President Clinton and other Democratic figures in photographs, while different voices lamented how heavy censorship portray Donald Trump and GOP members in a unfavorable manner.
Justice Department officials defended the redactions with intense hyperbole. “Never in U.S. history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Department of Justice been this open with the public about such a sensitive legal issue,” stated a senior Justice official Todd Blanche, who released a detailed memo describing the redaction process.
While Trump's identity and likeness appear in portions of the documents, the extensive redactions raise significant concerns about the information may be hidden beneath them. A number of Republicans swiftly called for increased openness.
“The public are raging and disengaging,” posted Republican Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.
Via a social media post, Republican Kentucky Thomas Massie said the censorship break the statute, and implied that a future Congress may move to impeach the top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Regrettably, this document release egregiously does not adhere to both the intent and the letter of the act,” he continued.
However, some rightwing commentators and former President loyalists came out strongly in support of the Justice Department's actions.
The release—from a justice department led by close Trump associate Pam Bondi—contains scores of documents that are completely censored, and many of the individuals shown in pictures have their identities blacked out.
Yet some are not, featuring prominent individuals like Bill Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The presence of Clinton, especially, allowed certain rightwing voices to launch the attack.
“It’s quite rich how the Democrats falsely claimed President Trump of being a sex offender, only for the Trump DOJ to unveil Epstein files that show Bill Clinton swimming nude with a pedophile,” wrote right-wing activist Laura Loomer.
“Recently released documents reveal Bill Clinton without a shirt in a hot tub with a female that is not his wife Hillary Clinton,” posted attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There is only one reason Epstein would photograph a Commander-in-Chief with a young woman in a jacuzzi: Leverage.”
Clinton has repeatedly stated he knew of no illegal actions by Epstein and has never been alleged to have participated in any wrongdoing. “The White House has not been hiding those files for months only to dump them at the last minute on a Friday to shield Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s representative Angel Ureña stated in a comment.
“The release is about protecting themselves from what comes next, or from information they will try and conceal permanently. So they can release as many low-quality decades-old photographs as they want, but this is not about Bill Clinton. Not previously, never will be,” the statement added.
Nonetheless, overall discourse on the political right was relatively muted following the release, especially when juxtaposed against the loud demands for transparency that came before the legislative vote to pass a bill mandating the documents' publication.
Loomer, who recently secured media access at the Pentagon, had been one of the loudest advocates for a complete disclosure. In February, she chastised the Justice Department generally and Bondi specifically after a group of conservative influencers were given hard-copy folders of materials that included no previously unseen data.
