British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside France's air force in a joint strike on an hidden munitions depot in Syria employed by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the British defence ministry.

The facility, identified by surveillance, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was situated in mountainous terrain just above the ancient city of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our fighter planes used Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a several approach shafts down to the facility... initial indications suggest the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any civilian impact in the attack late on Saturday and each participating jet returned safely, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as Daesh - established militant control over parts of both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This operation demonstrates our UK leadership, and commitment to work closely with allied nations, to eliminate any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," the British Defence Secretary John Healey said.

British military aircraft have carried out overwatch operations over Syria to "deter any attempted comeback" of IS subsequent to its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I extend gratitude to every member of our armed forces participating in this strike for their skill and their valour," Healey commented. "They were part of numerous UK service members deployed over the holidays. This mission, to take out dangerous terrorists who pose a risk to our safety, highlights how our armed forces are prepared to act, continuously, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and strong abroad."

In December, the American forces executed what it described as a "large-scale strike" against IS targets in the country, after an ambush claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The UN reports Islamic State still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in Syria and Iraq.
