The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unjustified” visa bans issued by the US on five Europeans working on combating online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
Officials from Europe including the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions were placed on figures that were at the heart of campaigns to enact laws governing American tech companies.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the move.
The bans were enacted on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, as well as several activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities argue the regulations are necessary to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.
This row risks becoming part of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash involving Washington and Europe.
