Australia's captain Expected to Feature a Key Part in Iconic Rivalry

Test match action

The pace bowler has secured 309 wickets in 71 five-day games with an average of 22.10.

The Australian selection chief Bailey has declared that skipper Cummins will have a crucial role in this winter's historic rivalry.

There were concerns that the veteran bowler might miss the series due to a ongoing back issue that was still troubling him.

Initial reports from team management suggested no definitive call had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the five-Test series set to start on 21 November in the WACA.

He revealed that the captain is progressing and felt positive about his chances of participating.

"It's clear that time is getting short and there are permutations around that, not only the back issue, but additional elements," Bailey remarked.

"We're encouraged. There's strong faith that he will feature a significant role. With luck starting in Perth. Should that not happen, then we'll pick it up."

Injury History

The captain missed Australia's limited-overs series against India and New Zealand in the previous weeks after examinations confirmed a lumbar bone stress.

He has a history of spinal problems, with setbacks in multiple past seasons forcing him out of three Australian summers in a short span.

Cummins stated he would be proactive in his approach in his comeback strategy to ensure his availability for the series.

The selector indicated that there was no confirmation if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his comeback but acknowledged it was "becoming urgent" for him to be fit for the first Test.

Contingency Plans

If he's unavailable, former captain Steve Smith will take over the captaincy.

Versatile player Green was excluded lately from Australia's squad for their one-day international series against the subcontinent side as a precautionary measure because of discomfort in his torso.

The selector characterized it as a "minor" injury and confirmed that Green will play in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "well-prepared to deliver overs."

"Considerable effort has gone into creating the schedule for him to be available for the first Test as an dual-role player," Bailey explained.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the first two ODIs anyway. The way he swings the bat in limited-overs, even if it just sets him back for a short period, we just made the decision to take a cautious route."
